The Athletics Union (AU) Social @ Coliseum, Manchester 2008/2009
In the 2008/2009 year Funk Events took over and successfully re-launched Manchester’s biggest student night, the AU Social. The previous year saw it decimated by poor promotion.
A weekly club night was held every Wednesday of the University student calendar at The Coliseum club (formally M2). The introduction of themes for each night helped increase numbers as it promoted inclusion and mass participation that every student could be part of.
Although primarily the night is for sports teams, Funk Events managed to ‘break the mould’ of previous years so that the night catered equally for people who played sport at the University, and also to those who were part of the wider student community.

2009-2010 Academic year saw another promoter taking control of the AU Social, this proved to be a mistake as the attendee numbers dropped tremendously. We were therefore asked once more to assist the University of Manchester to return The Athletic Union’s Social to its former glory.
The night was to be hosted at Tiger Tiger, a club with the largest capacity in Manchester, accommodating 2000 people. We knew that Funk Events had a lot of work to do to achieve our brief, due to the fact the night was now thought of as a dead night that no one would go to.
However, with Funk Events in control of its promotional material and action plan the AU Social was set to become the most popular student night in Manchester once more. In the previous year the night had become somewhat exclusive and this was not how the night should have become. So we first researched what the students at university now wanted, and developed the night due to their feedback.
Just a few months in and the night now fully established, it again stands as the most popular student night in Manchester, with numbers reaching capacity on numerous weeks. Thus, the AU Social confirms the success of Funk Events’ resources and promotion know-how.
